The Sierra San Pedro Mártir remains a hidden gem, relatively unknown to many travelers. However, over the years, it has gained popularity among nature enthusiasts due to its diverse range of snow activities, including hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife observation.
With the arrival of winter, several destinations across Mexico transform, and Sierra San Pedro Mártir in Baja California is no exception. The landscape undergoes a dramatic change as snow blankets the region, including the scenic area of La Rumorosa.
Located about four hours from downtown Ensenada, the Sierra San Pedro Mártir National Park experiences its first snowfalls in mid-November when the rains arrive and temperatures drop. The snow transforms the park’s rugged mountain terrain and conifer forests, creating a stunning white landscape. This forest is home to unique wildlife, including the endangered bighorn sheep and the California condor.
Visitors can fully embrace the winter season by staying overnight in the park’s cozy cabins, offering a perfect retreat amidst nature.
UNAM Observatory at San Pedro Mártir
Beyond its winter charm, Sierra San Pedro Mártir is also a premier stargazing destination. The National Park houses the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) Observatory, renowned for its exceptional conditions for observing stars and constellations.
Spanning 63,000 hectares, the park is home to Picacho del Diablo, the highest peak on the Baja California Peninsula, standing at 3,100 meters above sea level. From its summit, visitors can marvel at breathtaking views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez.
It’s crucial to check weather conditions before visiting, as temperatures can plummet to -5°C (23°F) with a wind chill as low as -11°C (12°F). Heavy fog or preventive road closures are also possible during this time.
La Rumorosa, Baja California
Situated just 30 minutes from the Pueblo Mágico of Tecate, La Rumorosa is famous for its stunning sunsets and unique rock formations. The area’s name comes from the whisper-like sounds produced by the wind passing through these rocky outcrops.
During winter, La Rumorosa’s warm, ochre landscape is transformed by a blanket of snow. Views stretch from La Rumorosa to the Laguna Salada area, offering opportunities to build snowmen, make snow angels, hike, or capture Instagram-worthy photos.
