The 4 Closest Beaches to Chihuahua You Need to Visit
by Alejandra Jiménez
Tiempo de lectura: 3min

Chihuahua’s proximity to the states of Sonora and Sinaloa makes it easy for residents to take short trips to enjoy a day at the beach.

When the heat rolls into Chihuahua, there’s no better plan than to swap the desert landscapes for something more tropical, like the beaches of northwest Mexico. Although the state boasts a diverse range of scenery—from desert dunes to the majestic Sierra Tarahumara—it doesn’t have any beaches within its borders.

However, just a few hours’ drive away, you can escape to four stunning beaches in the neighboring states of Sonora and Sinaloa, where the coastlines offer sun, sand, and sea.

The Closest Beaches to Chihuahua

San Carlos, Sonora

San Carlos is a favorite destination for Chihuahuans looking to enjoy the sea without traveling too far. Located 740 kilometers from the state capital, San Carlos sits on the Gulf of California coast in Sonora. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and blue waters, this destination offers several beaches to explore, with Playa Los Algodones, San Francisco, and Piedras Pintas being the most popular.

This “Pueblo Mágico” (Magic Town) is perfect for those seeking a mix of water activities and relaxation. Whether you want to swim, try out water sports, or simply enjoy the sea breeze from the shore, San Carlos has something for everyone.

Altata, Sinaloa

Just over 800 kilometers from Chihuahua City, Altata in Sinaloa is another excellent option for those looking to escape the heat and enjoy the sea. Located only 45 minutes from Culiacán, Altata is a fishing port that blends the charm of traditional Mexico with a modern 1.3-kilometer boardwalk, perfect for seaside strolls.

Its name, which means “place where water abounds,” perfectly reflects the allure of this area, surrounded by mangroves and natural beauty. Altata isn’t just great for relaxing on the beach; it’s also ideal for water sports like surfing, boating, and fishing.

Playa El Maviri, Sinaloa

Just six kilometers from Topolobampo, near Los Mochis, lies Playa El Maviri, one of Sinaloa’s hidden gems. This beach, washed by the waters of the Sea of Cortez, has a unique feature: its elongated shape allows you to enjoy the sea on both sides of the coast, making it an extraordinary spot to explore.

El Maviri is perfect for nature lovers and those seeking a more secluded and peaceful experience. Although it’s a popular beach among locals in northern Sinaloa, it still maintains a serene and relaxed vibe, ideal for disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Mazatlán, Sinaloa

While Mazatlán is more well-known and a bit farther away than the other options, it remains a favorite among Chihuahuans. About 900 kilometers from Chihuahua City, Mazatlán offers the perfect combination of stunning beaches, tourist infrastructure, and vibrant nightlife.
