San Diego rings in the Lunar Chinese New Year with vibrant food vendors, traditional performances, live music, dances, fun activities, and much more.

Each year, the fair draws approximately 25,000 attendees and features over 50 food and gift booths, lion and dragon parades, lantern processions, and engaging children’s crafts. Organized by the San Diego Chinese Center (SDCC) and sponsored by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association since 1983, this event has become one of San Diego’s most prominent and celebrated festivals. The fair runs from 10 AM to 5 PM on both days.
San Diego Chinese New Year Fair: A Celebration Full of Tradition
The opening ceremony typically takes place on Saturday around 10 AM, featuring the Lucky Lion Dancers of San Diego and more. One of the fair’s main attractions is the lantern parade, led by the Lucky Lion Dancers, which happens at 12 PM on both days.
Past highlights have included a mesmerizing Sichuan opera face-changing performance—an ancient art form once used to scare away wild beasts for survival. Other memorable acts include martial arts by the White Dragon Martial Arts group, a dance performance by the UCSD Chinese Dance Association, and an exhilarating taiko drum show by Naruwan Taiko of San Diego.
This year, the San Diego Chinese New Year Fair honors the Year of the Snake, a zodiac symbol deeply rooted in Chinese mythology and culture. Ancient Chinese legends speak of serpent-like figures such as Fu Xi and Nu Wa, divine creators of humanity, who inspired the worship of snake totems. Often referred to as the “little dragon,” the snake symbolizes intuition, introspection, and elegance. Those born in the Year of the Snake are believed to possess charm and tranquility, embodying a blend of grace and mystery that enriches this year’s festival theme.

California holds a special place in Chinese American history, as it was the first state where Chinese immigrants settled in the U.S., bringing with them the tradition of Chinese New Year celebrations. The San Diego Chinese New Year Fair, held in the city’s historic Chinatown at the intersection of Third Avenue and J Street, is a vibrant two-day festival focused on culture and cuisine. With thrilling performances, Asian art, and delicious Chinese dishes, the event is a family-friendly experience that is free to attend.
