Labor Day isn’t just about honoring the hard work of employees; it also marks one of the most anticipated shopping seasons in the United States.
In many countries, Labor Day is celebrated on May 1st, a date chosen to commemorate the start of a workers’ strike in Chicago, Illinois, in 1886. This strike aimed to secure the eight-hour workday, a standard now recognized in most of Europe and the Western world.
In the United States, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September, which in 2024 falls on September 2nd.
Why Is Labor Day Celebrated in September?
The origins of this holiday trace back to a parade held on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Noble Order of the Knights of Labor, inspired by a similar annual event in Toronto, Canada. In 1884, another parade was held, and the Knights of Labor decided to make it an annual tradition.
Meanwhile, other organizations, primarily those affiliated with the First International, preferred May 1st as a day of celebration, marking the start of the 1886 strike for an eight-hour workday, which led to the Haymarket Affair in Chicago on May 4th. President Grover Cleveland, concerned that a May 1st holiday might incite unrest and strengthen the socialist movement, quickly threw his support behind the Knights of Labor and their chosen date in September.
As a result, unlike most countries around the world, the United States celebrates Labor Day on a different date.
