In a genre traditionally dominated by men, Phoenix’s all-female Mariachi Pasión is making waves and rewriting the rules.
Since its inception, this trailblazing group has performed at countless weddings, quinceañeras, corporate events, and celebrations, each performance infused with passion and precision.
One of their most memorable moments? Opening for comedian George López during his 2014 comedy tour at the Celebrity Theatre—a testament to their growing influence and versatility.
Inclusivity is at the heart of Mariachi Pasión. The group has created a space where diverse audiences feel connected, welcomed, and celebrated through music. Their mission: to make everyone feel like they belong.
The group is composed of an impressive array of musicians: Michelle Vallarta, Issa Johnson, Angela Keeter, Carolina Sanchez, and Naxely Hurtado on violins; Melissa Leal on trumpet; Rosy Corona-Shreeves and Victoria Amador-Morales expertly handling the vihuelas (small five-string guitars); and Betty Duarte bringing the resonant, soulful tones of the guitarrón.
How Did Mariachi Pasión Begin?
Mariachi Pasión was born in April 2002 in a music class at Arizona State University. What started as a fun idea among eight friends to perform for a family member soon evolved into something much greater. Today, the group has grown to 15 members, with many juggling their academic journeys alongside their musical careers.
The driving force behind it all? Betty Duarte-Matwick’s passion for mariachi. She envisioned a world where opportunities in music weren’t confined by experience or gender. Her dream was to create an inclusive space where women and people from diverse backgrounds could thrive in the music industry—changing the landscape one note at a time.
In 2003, she founded Mariachi Pasión, carving out a space for women to not only play but excel and shine in a male-dominated field.
A Mission Beyond Music
The camaraderie within Mariachi Pasión is palpable. Betty Duarte plays a dual role: as a guitarronera and a mentor, guiding younger musicians through the intricacies of mariachi. Together, they navigate the highs and lows of life, both on and off stage.
For Duarte, the vision extends beyond performances. She’s committed to empowering the next generation of female musicians, ensuring the spirit of mariachi continues to thrive in new and transformative ways.
