This incredible landscape is a realm of panoramic wonders and fascinating science. It boasts one of the world’s most colorful and extensive concentrations of petrified forests, along with the vibrant hues of the Painted Desert, historic structures, archaeological sites, and 200-million-year-old fossil displays. Also, you’ll find hills and mesas, ancient petroglyphs, wildlife, and even wildflowers, depending on the season of your visit.

What can you do when visiting the Petrified Forest National Park?

You can easily take in the unique beauty of this attraction from your car, with just a few stops to enjoy breathtaking landscapes. Imagine what you can discover by walking one of the well-maintained short trails or even after a hike in the more remote areas.

Outdoor activities include visits to points of interest, photography, hiking, horseback riding, backpacking trips, and birdwatching. The park boasts over 52,000 acres (21,000 ha) of natural landscape to explore. While outdoor exploration may tempt one to take a small piece of the petrified forest, it is prohibited by law to remove petrified wood or other natural and cultural artifacts found within the park. Gift shops inside and outside the park sell petrified wood collected from private lands outside the park boundaries.

You can also visit the Painted Desert Visitor Center, Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark, Rainbow Forest Museum, or the park’s website for guided tour options.
