The flavor, gastronomy, traditions, and identity of La Guerrerense remain in the same place that for many years has represented Ensenada, not only in Mexico but in the rest of the world.
La Guerrerense is a famous seafood cart located in Ensenada, Baja California, that has gained international recognition for its fresh seafood dishes and authentic and traditional atmosphere in the city with more than 60 years of history.
The owner and chef, Sabina Bandera, has been serving locals and tourists for decades, earning the title of ‘Queen of Street Food’ in Mexico, and since 1960, La Guerrerense has held a special place in the area.
La Guerrerense offers a wide variety of dishes, such as ceviches, tostadas, seafood cocktails, and more, all prepared with fresh and local ingredients.
However, beyond the recognition over the years from the people who gather at La Guerrerense, the gastronomic website Culinaria Mexicana awarded it recognition as one of the best restaurants in Mexico.
Culinaria Mexicana offers an annual guide called ‘Guía México Gastronómico: los 250 restaurantes de 2023 Culinaria Mexicana,’ which is published by Larousse cocina and provides a special recognition to the best culinary places in the country, where La Guerrerense holds a special place.
The award ceremony in 2023 was held at a gala dinner in Acapulco, Guerrero, where celebrities from the national gastronomy scene gathered.
La Guerrerense in Ensenada has been awarded numerous awards and has been praised by chefs and critics from around the world, including Anthony Bourdain, who highlighted the stall in his show ‘No Reservations’.
The stall of La Guerrerense is located on the corner of Alvarado and López Mateos streets in the center of Ensenada, Baja California It is open during typical hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., although these hours may vary depending on the day and season.
However, it’s important to arrive early as sometimes the most popular dishes that have all the tradition of Ensenada may sell out quickly.
Highlighted dishes from La Guerrerense
- Sea urchin tostada: a crispy tostada topped with fresh sea urchin and a flavorful spicy sauce.
- Mixed tostada: a combination of fresh seafood such as octopus, shrimp, clam, and other ingredients.
- Fish ceviche: a classic and refreshing ceviche prepared with fresh fish, lime juice, onion, tomato, and cilantro.
- Aguachile: a spicy and refreshing dish made with shrimp marinated in lime juice, green chilies, and other ingredients such as red onion, cucumber, and cilantro.
- Octopus in its ink tostada: a delicious tostada with octopus cooked in its own ink and seasoned with avocado and other fresh ingredients.
- Shrimp cocktail: a shrimp cocktail served in a glass with tomato sauce, onion, cilantro, and avocado.
In addition to its culinary offerings, La Guerrerense offers a wide variety of homemade salsas that you can add to your dish, ranging in spice level, and which have given the place a special touch over the years.
In response to its growing popularity, Sabina Bandera also opened a restaurant called “Sabina Restaurante” in Ensenada, where she offers a wider and more comfortable gastronomic experience, while still maintaining the essence and flavor of La Guerrerense.
However, all the flavor, gastronomy, traditions, and identity of La Guerrerense remain in the same place that for many years has represented Ensenada not only in Mexico but in the rest of the world.
