Located in far west Texas, right on the border with Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, El Paso is home to nearly 700,000 residents. It is the sixth most populous city in Texas and the 21st largest in the entire country. In fact, El Paso is often regarded as one of the most important cities in the U.S., just behind San Diego, California.

Why is it Called ‘The Sun City’?

According to the National Weather Service, El Paso enjoys an average of 302 sunny days per year, with 83% of daylight hours bathed in sunshine. This impressive figure is the main reason the city is affectionately known as The Sun City.

While some may attribute this nickname to the city’s warm, welcoming atmosphere, the true reason lies in its geography. Situated in a desert region, El Paso experiences dry conditions and very little rainfall, allowing the sun to shine almost year-round. Additionally, the surrounding mountains create a natural barrier that blocks clouds, resulting in stronger and more frequent sunshine.

Altogether, these factors make The Sun City a unique and inviting destination for visitors.
