The presence of black crickets in North Texas is on the rise, turning this insect into one of the most widespread pests during this time of year across much of the state.
As we enter the fall season, crickets will become more common in Central Texas, causing annoyance to many residents.
According to Keld Ewart, Chief Operations Officer at The Bug Master, crickets will be more prevalent this year compared to previous years due to the wet summer.
What’s Behind the Black Cricket Outbreak in Texas?
Black crickets are becoming one of the most widespread pests across the state during this time of year, as reported by Texas Agrilife Extension.
Belonging to the Gryllus assimilis genus, these insects are commonly known as field or black field crickets, yet remain relatively understudied.
Outbreaks tend to follow dry springs and summers, with the largest populations seen in August and September, especially after periods of heavy rainfall, explains Michael Merchant, who authored a piece on these insects for Texas Agrilife Extension.
Field crickets lay their eggs in the fall, preferring exposed soil. A single female can lay between 150 and 400 eggs. These eggs survive the winter in the soil and hatch in the spring.
While field crickets primarily live outdoors, they can occasionally invade homes, becoming a nuisance due to their swarming behavior and the unpleasant odor they produce in large numbers.
Experts advise that reducing outdoor lighting is key to controlling cricket populations, as they are attracted to bright lights during their mating season.
Expert Tips to Keep Black Crickets Out of Your Home
Keld Ewart, from The Bug Master, offers some helpful tips:
- Use dim lighting for outdoor fixtures.
- Keep your yard well-maintained on a regular basis.
- Seal any openings in your home to prevent entry.
Additionally, experts recommend seeking help from a professional exterminator before crickets become a major problem. Taking a proactive approach can help you avoid potential infestations.
Rather than relying on chemical insecticides, crickets can be repelled naturally using scents like mint, lavender, lemongrass, and vinegar. Applying essential oils or natural repellents with these aromas around your home may effectively keep crickets away.
