The controversial film Emilia Pérez, directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, made history by leading the 2025 Oscar nominations with a total of 13 nods, becoming the most-nominated foreign production in the awards’ history.
Despite harsh criticism for being a musical tackling social issues such as drug trafficking, femicides, and trans activism in Mexico—without any Mexicans involved in its production—Emilia Pérez has emerged as one of the favorites for the ceremony, which will take place on Monday, March 3, in Los Angeles, California.

What Is Emilia Pérez About and Where to Watch It in Mexico?
Emilia Pérez follows the story of Rita Moro, a lawyer played by Zoe Saldaña, who represents criminal leader Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, portrayed by Karla Sofía Gascón. Del Monte decides to leave his criminal life behind to fulfill his dream of transitioning and becoming Emilia Pérez.
After her transformation, Emilia seeks to reconnect with her wife Jessi, played by Selena Gomez, and their children. The film blends drama, comedy, and music, standing out particularly for its soundtrack, which features the award-winning song El Mal.

Rated B15 in Mexico, Emilia Pérez will debut in Mexican cinemas on January 23, 2025. This highly anticipated release will mark the start of its screening in theaters nationwide, including chains like Cinépolis and Cinemex.
Although the film premiered on Netflix in the United States in November 2024, it is still unclear whether the streaming platform will release it on its Mexican service. Additionally, platforms like Apple TV+ and Prime Video may include it in their catalogs.
