A group of Danes is rallying support for an unusual proposal: purchasing California from the United States.

They are close to gathering the required signatures to officially present the offer to President Donald Trump.
“California has sun, beaches, great weather, and Trump doesn’t like it. It’s exactly what we need.” That’s the essence of the lighthearted yet audacious proposal spearheaded by the group “Denmarkification.” Instead of selling Greenland to the U.S., these Danes want to flip the script and buy California—a state Trump has frequently criticized for its progressive politics.
Their initiative, humorously dubbed “MACA” (Make California Great Again), has gained international attention. “Denmarkification” argues that while Greenland remains a vital and autonomous territory supported by Denmark, it would make more sense for the U.S. to sell California instead.
Why California?
According to “Denmarkification’s” website, the reasons are clear:
- Disneyland: Rebranding it to “Hans Christian Andersenland” with a Viking Mickey Mouse? Yes, please.
- Climate: California boasts 300 days of sunshine per year—a perfect escape from Denmark’s often harsh weather.
- Tech Hub: Acquiring a new group of Silicon Valley tech experts? Ideal for any thriving democracy.
- Avocados: California produces 90% of the U.S.’s avocados, ensuring an endless supply of avocado toast.
- Freedom & Culture: Denmark prides itself on its values of freedom and democracy, making California a natural fit.

The proposal isn’t just about Danish benefits—it also outlines why Trump should be interested. “Let’s be honest: Trump is not exactly California’s biggest fan. He’s called it ‘the most broken state in the Union’ and clashed with its leaders for years,” states the group’s website.
To sweeten the deal, the Danes are even offering Trump a lifetime supply of Danish pastries as a gesture of goodwill.
The Danes’ plan for California
“Denmarkification” has a structured plan to fund the purchase and integrate California into Danish society:
- Social Welfare & Healthcare: Expanding Denmark’s well-established universal healthcare and fact-based policy-making to its new Californian territory.
- Crowdfunding $1 billion: This equates to just 200,000 Danish kroner per citizen—easily attainable by cutting back on a few lattes.
- Top-tier negotiators: Bringing in LEGO executives and the cast of Borgen to handle discussions.
- Rebranding Los Angeles: Transforming it into “Løs Ångeles.”
- Introducing Danish values: Implementing hygge (Denmark’s secret to happiness) in Hollywood, bike lanes in Beverly Hills, and organic smørrebrød on every corner.

The “Denmarkification” website includes an online petition aimed at reaching 200,000 signatures. If Trump wins another term, they believe negotiations could move forward, transforming California into a Danish paradise.
Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly emphasized his interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark—a move the Danish government has dismissed as “absurd.” The petition playfully flips the narrative, challenging Trump’s relationship with California, a state where he has lost the last three presidential elections.
Whether satire or serious, the Danes’ movement has certainly sparked conversations about geopolitics, national identity, and the evolving relationship between Denmark and the United States.
