Following this agreement, the ports of Mazatlán and Topolobampo formalized their relationship with the port of Long Beach, California, United States, with the objective of strengthening the opportunities for port mobility.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) consists of four sections that address the purpose of the agreement, areas of collaboration, relevant discussions, and personal contacts. This pact is part of a plan that began in June of this year.

Cooperation between Ports of Sinaloa and the United States

In this agreement, a collaboration was established on aspects that encompass joint promotion in marketing, security, sustainability, technology, and city-port relations. In addition, they committed to promoting the dissemination of information on decarbonization initiatives in all ports, including technologies such as hydrogen and ship electrification.

The purpose is to strengthen ties, share knowledge, and successful experiences on municipal issues, such as public services, waste management, wastewater, and renewable energies. Additionally, the aim is to establish meaningful relationships with the tourist, real estate, and commercial sectors of the three cities.

An Anticipated Agreement

Before the signing of this agreement took place, Alfredo Ruelas Solís, president of the Economic Development Council in the southern zone, emphasized that this agreement not only represents a close relationship between two areas but also lays the foundations for economic exchange and significant collaboration.

A New Commercial Route

Among the agreed agreements is the evaluation of the viability of a transport route between the ports of Mazatlán and Topolobampo, Sinaloa, and the port of Long Beach. Also planned is an exchange of knowledge about sustainable programs and a possible provision of green hydrogen from Sinaloa to the port of Long Beach as a first initiative.

The Port of Long Beach holds a position of great relevance on a global level. Each year, this port handles approximately 9 million containers, which translates to a flow of nearly 29 thousand containers daily coming from all over the world.

This impressive figure significantly surpasses the port activity of Mexico as a whole, as all Mexican ports combined handle around 8.3 million containers in the same period. It is expected that these agreements will foster significant connections for Mexico and the United States.
