What is the prize for the First Skate Open in Hermosillo?

This competition is unique in the state and the region; there are no precedents for a Skate Open like this.

Parque La Ruina has been a venue for various skate-related events: camps, competitions, classes, etc., as well as concerts and cultural events, all free of charge and open to the general public.

This Skate Open represents a great opportunity for those who practice this sport, as it is a pioneering event in both the state of Sonora and the northwest region of the country.

The prize pool amounts to 65,000 Mexican pesos (3,804 USD).

Two global legends of this sport will headline the Skate Open

Hosting duties for the event will be handled by Steve Caballero and Mike McGill, both esteemed skateboarding figures from the United States.

These two individuals were part of the Bones Brigade. This was a skateboarding team considered the most important and successful in the 1980s. It belonged to the Powell Peralta brand, created by the legendary skater George Powell and Stacy Peralta, an audiovisual creator.

Among its members were renowned skateboarding stars such as Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, and Lance Mountain, alongside Steve Caballero and Mike McGill, who will be the team’s representatives at the tournament held at Parque La Ruina.

Steve Caballero was the creator of the “Caballerial” in 1981, one of the most recreated tricks by skaters worldwide. To this day, Caballero continues to practice this discipline, in addition to being an entrepreneur and artist with his punk rock band, “Urethane.”

Caballero is also the creator of one of Vans’ most successful models, which bears his name.

Mike McGill, for his part, introduced the “McTwist” in 1984, and there are now numerous tutorials available as many skaters aspire to master this trick, emulating the American’s achievement. Today, he continues to be a skater and owns a store in California.

A free space for recreational and professional skateboarding in Hermosillo

The bowl at Parque La Ruina is a space designed to resemble a pool or bowl surface (hence its name), and it’s a skateboarding discipline that allows for tricks and variations not typically feasible in street skateboarding. It was designed and built by California Skateparks in 2019.

Since then, the space has become one of the favorite spots for skateboarding, BMX, and rollerskating communities, as it is always open and access is completely free.

In Sonora, Parque La Ruina’s bowl is the only one that meets the specifications for a professional competition, making it worthy of hosting two important figures from the Bones Brigade.
