What Is a Capybara?

The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) holds the title of the largest rodent in the world. Adult capybaras can weigh up to 145 pounds and grow over four feet long. They have barrel-shaped bodies covered in coarse brown fur, small ears, and webbed feet—perfect for swimming. These semi-aquatic mammals are native to South America, where they thrive in savannas and dense forests near bodies of water.

They are highly social animals, living in groups of 10 to 20 members, though some herds can reach up to 100 individuals. A dominant male leads the group, ensuring their safety. These creatures are excellent swimmers, capable of staying submerged for up to five minutes to evade predators. Their herbivorous diet consists mainly of grasses and aquatic plants, and they possess a specialized digestive system that efficiently extracts nutrients from tough plant materials.
