The legendary Whaley House, a central landmark in Old Town San Diego, is widely regarded as one of the city’s most iconic attractions.

The History of Whaley House

The story of Whaley House dates back to its construction in 1855. Before it was built, the land purchased by Thomas Whaley was the site of one of San Diego’s most infamous public executions: the hanging of the notorious thief, Yankee Jim Robinson.

Years after Thomas Whaley, his wife Anna, and their three children officially moved into the house in 1857, tragedy struck. Their 18-month-old son, Thomas, died from scarlet fever.

Shortly after this loss, a fire broke out in the family’s general store, which had only recently opened within the house. This event led the Whaleys to relocate to San Francisco, but they returned a few years later with five children. Despite the home being used for various businesses over the years, Thomas chose to remain in the house.

One of the most tragic events in the home’s history was the suicide of the youngest Whaley daughter, Violet, in 1885. After a brief, shameful divorce from George Bertolacci, Violet was overwhelmed with despair and ended her life by shooting herself in the chest.

Over the years, the house continued to bear witness to both life and death within the Whaley family. Visitors began reporting strange noises, with many believing they were hearing the ghostly footsteps of Yankee Jim Robinson. The strong, heavy footsteps and other unexplainable phenomena became linked to the house’s haunted reputation.

Although no one has lived in Whaley House since 1953, reports of paranormal activity continue to this day. Visitors have experienced cold spots, doors slamming shut, lights flickering, and even the crystals on the chandelier in the music room swinging without warning. Many believe the spirits of the Whaley family still roam the house today.

For many years, Whaley House has been a popular tourist destination. After years of neglect, Francis Whaley, the eldest son, took it upon himself to restore the house in 1909. He began welcoming visitors, sharing the home’s mysterious history and the paranormal events that still seem to echo through its walls.
