Presidio San Agustin del Tucson to Host Traditional ‘Grito de Independencia’

The iconic Presidio San Agustin del Tucson plays a key role in the vibrant Mexican Independence Day celebrations held across Southern Arizona.

The Presidio San Agustin Museum, a recreation of the original fort built in 1775, transports visitors back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of the region’s earliest settlers. This year, as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month festivities, the Presidio continues its tradition of honoring Mexico’s rich history and culture.

What to Expect at Presidio San Agustin del Tucson’s Independence Day Celebration

On September 14th, the festivities in Presidio San Agustin will highlight Mexican culture through performances by Ballet Folklórico Tapatío and lively mariachi music.

At 7:00 p.m., a representative from the Mexican Consulate will lead the traditional “Grito de Independencia,” the passionate cry that marks the beginning of Mexico’s fight for independence.

Immediately after, at 7:15 p.m., a special presentation will explore how Tucson’s identity evolved from a Spanish settlement to a Mexican town.

Other Places to Celebrate Mexican Independence Day in Arizona

Arizona boasts one of the largest Latino populations in the U.S., with nearly a third of the state’s residents identifying as Latino (32.5%). Of that group, over 2.3 million are of Mexican descent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Every September, communities across the state come together to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. Here’s a guide to some of the most exciting events happening this year:

Phoenix
Grito de Independencia at the State Capitol
Join Mexico’s Consul General in Phoenix, Jorge Mendoza Yescas, along with state legislators and officials, for the official “Grito de Independencia” ceremony at the Arizona State Capitol. Now in its third year, this event will feature live music, delicious food, and family-friendly activities, all leading up to the traditional independence shout.
When: Sunday, September 15, 6:00-10:30 p.m.
Where: Arizona State Capitol, 1700 W. Washington St., Phoenix. Free admission.

Mesa
El Grito Celebration in Mesa
The Mexican Consulate in Phoenix, East Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Women’s Innovative Network invite you to join their El Grito celebration at Pioneer Park on September 14. The event will feature folkloric dancers, live music, and a variety of Mexican food vendors.
When: Saturday, September 14, 2:00-7:00 p.m.
Where: Pioneer Park, 526 E. Main St., Mesa. Free admission.

Tucson
Mexican Independence Day: Concert and Grito
To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month and honor Mexican Independence Day, the Mexican Consulate in Tucson is hosting a special concert featuring Mexican and Latin American classical music performed by the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. Performers include Mariachi Aztlán from Pueblo High School, the Folk Dance Company, mezzo-soprano Diana Peralta, and Ballet Tucson. Enjoy traditional food, snacks, and Hispanic-inspired products from local businesses, along with folkloric performances, mariachi, and norteño music.
When: Sunday, September 15, 4:30-7:00 p.m.
