The park boasts over 52,000 acres (21,000 ha) of natural landscape to explore. While outdoor exploration may tempt one to take a small piece of the petrified forest, it is prohibited by law to remove petrified wood or other natural and cultural artifacts found within the park. Gift shops inside and outside the park sell petrified wood collected from private lands outside the park boundaries.

How can you tour the Petrified Forest National Park area?

The park can only be traversed by private vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, or through commercial guided tours. Park roads, parking areas, and stopping points are suitable for large caravans, including those towing smaller vehicles. Within the park, vehicles, including mountain bikes, are not permitted off-road.

The drive through the park takes approximately 45 minutes, though a typical visit lasts between 2 and 3 hours with stops at scenic viewpoints or trails along the park road.
