The Australian tennis player achieved a historic feat at the Los Cabos Open 2024 by winning both singles and doubles titles
The Los Cabos Open 2024 came to a close this past Sunday, February 25th, and with it, the new champion of the tournament was also determined. Jordan Thompson emerged as the winner of both the singles and doubles trophies, achieving an unprecedented historic feat in this event.
During the quarterfinals, the competition began to tighten, with each participant understanding that every match was do or die to secure a spot in the following rounds. Alexander Zverev left Thanasi Kokkinakis in his wake, while Casper Rudd and Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Nuno Borges and Aleksander Kovacevic, respectively.
For Jordan Thompson, the opponent was the American Alex Michelsen, whom he managed to defeat to move one step closer to the Los Cabos Open championship in the 2024 edition.
As the semifinals unfolded, the top four players of the tournament were already decided, and the action continued to progress, leading to two matches that defined the tournament’s history: Tsitsipas vs. Ruud and Thompson vs. Zverev.
Alexander Zverev and Jordan Thompson faced off on Friday, February 23rd, in a match filled with emotions. Ultimately, the Australian managed to overcome the German and became one of the finalists of the Los Cabos Open.
On the other side, Tsitsipas faced Rudd in his quest to secure his second consecutive championship. However, his feat was thwarted by the performance of the Norwegian Casper Rudd, who defeated him to become Thompson’s opponent in the grand final.
The Australian and the Norwegian faced each other on Saturday, February 24th, where Thompson prevailed with scores of 6-3 and 7-6(4) against Casper Rudd, lifting the first title of the night in his participation in the Los Cabos Open 2024.
Despite his 11 years as a professional, this is the first ATP title for Thompson, who would soon take this feat to another level by also claiming victory for the second time in the tournament, reaching the final of the doubles category as well.
In addition to his outstanding performance in the Singles category, Thompson teamed up with Max Purcell to once again face Casper Rudd, this time alongside William Blumberg, and knock them out of the doubles semifinal.
The grand final took place between Jordan and Max, facing off against the Ecuadorian Gonzalo Escobar and the Kazakh Aleksandr Nedovyesov in a match that spanned two sets and a tiebreak, etching their names in the history of the tournament, as well as in tennis lore.
Jordan Thompson’s impressive performance made headlines over the weekend as, to achieve the double victory at the Los Cabos Open 2024, he played three matches in less than eight hours during a single day that spanned from Saturday night to Sunday morning.
With the Australian’s double championship, the Los Cabos Open concluded its activities for the 2024 edition, ending another successful ATP tournament in Mexico. It was not only a success among the participating tennis players but also among the attendees, with the on-court action and pre-tournament activities garnering praise.
