Baja California seeks to install electric car companies to accelerate economy

Baja California seeks to sneak into an emerging opportunity niche: the electric car market. The Ministry of Economy is looking for electric car assembly companies to settle in Tijuana.

Due to its proximity to California, the border city of Tijuana is in premium territory. Why? California is one of the largest consumer markets for electric cars, according to a bulletin from the Government of Baja California.

Mónica Duhem Delgado, head of the Global Economic Intelligence Unit, participated as a guest in the bimonthly meeting of Economic and Industrial Development of Tijuana (Desarrollo Económico e Industrial de Tijuana, DEITAC). At the meeting, the official explained the advantages of the semiconductor industry and electromobility.

Hence, Duhem Delgado indicated that the areas where Mexico can enter have to do with the assembly, testing and manufacturing of software. The minister stressed that by attracting investment in these innovation sectors, high-value and well-paid jobs are created, which results in economic and social development.

“Large factories will settle in Texas and Arizona, so we are already seeing the services we can offer from Mexico. This will create a supply chain, and bring those links part to Mexico”.

Working together to achieve the installation of electric car companies

In the case of Baja California, the company Skyworks already has an agreement with Conalep to train young people with technical skills, which it seeks to replicate for the topic of electric cars. Additionally, the Ministry of Economy promotes a dual education plan. This project has the purpose of generating technicians with the skills that industries require.

“These are emerging sectors that give a lot of value to supply chains, especially in this global context. We know of the shortage of semiconductors worldwide and their importance for the production chains”. Later, these technicians can access jobs in companies that are part of the program.

Carlos Jaramillo Silva, President of DEITAC.

Carlos Jaramillo Silva, President of DEITAC, said that this organization -with the authorities- intends to define the best place in Baja California to bring these high-value investments. Perhaps soon we’ll see more electric cars circulating in Mexican territory.
