Sempra Infrastructure’s multimillion-dollar investment in the Cimarrón Wind Farm in Baja California, which will provide energy to Silicon Valley, is well-known.

Sempra Infrastructure, the company developing the Energía Sierra Juárez (ESJ) wind complex, announced a $550 million investment to develop the Cimarrón Wind Farm in Baja California.

This project is part of the third phase of the Energía Sierra Juárez (ESJ) wind complex, with its primary goal being to supply renewable energy to Silicon Valley Power for the next two decades.

The Cimarrón Wind Farm, with an approximate total capacity of 320 megawatts (MW), is being viewed very positively, marking the beginning of a transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

Furthermore, a 20-year power purchase agreement has already been secured with Silicon Valley, ensuring long-term supply of clean energy to the city of Santa Clara, California.

Commitment to clean and renewable energy

Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, expressed his enthusiasm for expanding the wind complex to meet the clean and renewable energy needs of Silicon Valley Power.

“Expectations are high that the Cimarrón project will yield robust financial returns and mark a significant stride towards fulfilling our mission of becoming the leading energy infrastructure company in North America,” stated Bird.

The success of the Cimarrón Wind Farm relies on partnerships with industry leaders. Sempra Infrastructure has already signed agreements with Vestas for the acquisition and installation of 64 wind turbines, as well as a similar agreement with Elecnor for the engineering and construction of the wind farm.

The Cimarrón Wind Farm is expected to begin generating power by late 2025, thereby contributing to the sustainable energy supply in the region.

Strategic partnerships for the success of the Cimarrón Wind Farm

These strategic partnerships ensure efficiency and quality at every stage of the project’s development.

The project will benefit from Sempra Infrastructure’s existing network, utilizing the high-voltage transmission line that directly connects the ESJ wind complex to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).

This infrastructure ensures a reliable and efficient connection to the California market, facilitating the supply of renewable energy.

With the first two phases of the ESJ wind complex already operational and long-term power purchase agreements in place with San Diego Gas & Electric, the commissioning of the Cimarrón project will increase the total installed capacity of the complex to over 580 MW, solidifying its position as one of the largest wind complexes in Mexico.

Positive environmental and economic impact

The energy produced by the Cimarrón Wind Farm will be equivalent to the annual consumption of over 84,000 households, significantly contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 210,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

In addition to the positive environmental impact, the construction of the wind farm is estimated to generate over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, thus benefiting the local economy.

Once Cimarrón comes online, the ESJ wind complex will reach a total installed capacity of over 580 MW, solidifying its position as one of the most significant renewable energy projects in Mexico.

With the investment in the Cimarrón project, Sempra Infrastructure plans to expand the Energía Sierra Juárez wind complex. This investment not only represents a significant boost for the renewable energy industry in Mexico but also reflects a commitment to environmental sustainability and economic development in the region.
