The Mexican migrant community in the United States will have the opportunity to participate in Mexico’s elections on June 2nd through three different voting methods across the U.S. and Canada, including in-person voting.
On Sunday, June 2nd, Mexico will hold one of its most significant national events: the national elections. With over 99 million voters expected to participate, this will be one of the largest electoral processes in history.
While most voters who will elect the new president and over 20,000 national positions reside in Mexico, a substantial number of Mexicans abroad will also take part in this crucial day. Many of these voters are in the United States, where Mexican citizens can exercise their right to vote and participate in this important electoral process.
In-person voting for mexican migrants for the first time in the U.S. and Canada
The National Electoral Institute (INE) has confirmed that, for the first time in a federal election, ‘in-person voting from abroad’ will be implemented. Raúl Cruz, spokesperson for the INE, stated in an interview with Los Angeles Times that, as of February 25th, when the electoral registration closed, 157,227 people in the United States alone were eligible to vote.
However, the INE reported that in the U.S., Canada, and Spain, a total of 258,461 Mexican migrants will be able to vote in these elections, with 223,961 of them registering on the Nominal List of Electors Abroad.

For the ‘in-person voting from abroad’ scheduled for June 2nd, there will be 23 consular locations, as informed by the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE). The locations are as follows:
United States: Mexican citizens abroad can vote at 20 consular locations in the following cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, New Brunswick, New York, Oklahoma, Orlando, Phoenix, Raleigh, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Ana, Seattle, and Washington D.C.
Canada: Mexican citizens abroad can vote in Montreal.
How to vote in Mexico’s Elections from abroad
- Obtaining the Voting Credential
The first step to participating in the 2024 Mexican elections from the United States and Canada is to obtain the voting credential through the INE. Mexican citizens residing in these countries can request this official document by visiting their nearest consulate.
- Choosing the Voting Method
Once the voting credential is approved, voters must choose one of the following voting methods: internet voting, postal voting, or in-person voting.
Internet Voting
Mexican citizens abroad can cast their vote electronically through the Internet Voting System (SIVEI) from May 18th until 6 PM on June 2nd. For any questions about the process, voters can call 1 (866) 986 8306.
Postal Voting
Those who chose postal voting will receive a Postal Voting Package containing printed ballots, instructions, and a prepaid envelope to send the votes back to the INE in Mexico. It is crucial for voters to send their envelopes with the votes as soon as possible to ensure they arrive in Mexico no later than 8 AM on June 1st, 2024.
In-Person Voting
On June 2nd, Mexican citizens can go to one of the Voting Reception Modules set up by the INE to cast their vote. Those who registered beforehand will have their spot secured. However, those who did not register can still vote in one of the 1,500 additional spaces available at each reception module.
